Central Onsen

(Hot Springs – Central San’in)

Many of the hot springs in central San’in have a close connection to the world of Japanese mythology. For example, Izumo City’s Yunokawa Hot Springs is where Yakami Hime is said to have soaked on her way to be with Ōkuninushi-no-ōkami, the main deity enshrined at Izumo Grand Shrine. Already famed for her beauty, the waters not only eased her weary body but also made her even more beautiful than she already was. It is because of this tale that the Yunokawa Hot Springs is known as one of the three Bijinno Yu (hot springs of beauty) in Japan.

Matsue’s Tamatsukuri Hot Springs have a history of more than 1200 years, and were recorded in a local record of the area written at the time, which said that the waters there have the power to make your skin look younger and cure any ailment. As such, its waters were not only enjoyed by the local residents, but by the gods themselves. Also worth visiting in this area are Matsue Shinjiko Hot Springs, located on the north side of Lake Shinji, and Kaike Hot Springs in Yonago, which are right on the Sea of Japan Coast. Both hot spring districts provide brilliant views augmented by the nearby lake or sea waters.
